Word is stuck, it won't open files, why?

I can open Word, I can type something, but I can't open a file that has
already been saved without the program going to a "Not Responding" format.
There are files to the right of the typing area and I can pick and choose
those files only. It will not insert files either without "Not Responding."
I've made all the downloads and it still won't cooperate. What can I do to
fix it?
