Word jam

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther)

I've got Office 2004 installed on my Mac (system OSX3.9). Word constantly freezes up on me, and the little spinning beachball from Hell is an unwelcome but frequent visitor to the screen. I tried dumping the p.list and then the Word file from the Library, but these procedures brought me no joy. I should also note that letters appear on the screen perhaps a second or so after I've typed them. This is especially the case when I'm using Entourage. Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

Thanks very much.

What Mac model is it? How much RAM is installed? Apple menu => About this
Mac.

The answers (not necessarily from me) will depend on this info.

I would suggest that you reboot the computer, then do not start Word until
you have deleted the Normal template from the Microsoft User Data folder.

That should fix "new" documents created from now.

To fix "old" documents, carefully select everything except the last
paragraph mark and paste into a new document.

Cheers

Your Normal template is there - it's named "Normal" (no extension).

Assuming you have closed Word, and have good copies of the "AutoRecovery
save of..." files, you can delete them and the Word Work File.

Thanks for the quick response, J.E. McGimpsey. Just to double-check...What is listed as "Normal" is a simple Word document. Is that the template referred to?

Thanks,
David Aronson

I suspect it's actually a Word template, not a document.

If it's actually a document, my experience is that Word04 will crash on
startup.

In any case, you can delete it.

Well, so much for optimism. I tried to switch from Firefox to Word and once again the dreaded spinning beachball appeared on the screen. Word is jammed again. Any ideas?

What does Activity Monitor say is going on - is Word using a lot of CPU
time?

Does it happen every time you switch? or only with certain files open?

I'm afraid I might have botched the last reply, so just read this as an answer to your response.

The CPU ranges from 79 to 85 percent. It happens almost all the time and I think it's usually or always from Firefox. Only Word, Firefox , Entourage, the Worldbook Dictionary, Excel and Preview are open, but when they're not, I have the same problem from Firefox to Word.

By the way, I can't find the last paragragph mark, so I've just been copying old docs up to the last letter to avoided the vaunted paragraph mark. Is taht okay, and how do I get to see the paragraph mark?
