i am creating outlines from class notes daily. At least 3 times a
night (usually much more) Word will crash. There is no error report,
no crash report, no reason at all given. I have dealt with it
begrudgingly by copying all, then pasting in a new document and
proceeding from there. However, i just lost (not able to recover from
autorecovery- which runs every minute or so) about 15 pages of detailed
outline. this represents about 6 hours of work. I am furious. just
don't have any time to spare on stupid microsoft crashes. please help.
is there any way to recover (spotlight can't find anything)

Mac Tiger 10.4.1

what seems to be happening is that when the document freezes and i
autorecover it and scroll down to begin typing where it left off...the
raimbow wheel of death pops up and it freezes as i near the bottom of
the document.
but i am not getting any error messages at all. in this forum i keep
finding discussions about word freezing and a font error message
popping up. i have yet to have this happen to me.

Usually Font problems make word crash as soon as you launch it. I've
seen what you describe with a corrupted document. Does it ever happen
when you create a new document from scratch??

Did you also try the usual maintenance operations like repairing
permissions and checking your hard drive for directory trouble ??

I am have the same problem as the original poster, when making
outlines, except it happens in normal view and pagelayout view. Word
hangs randomly, at any time, and not consistently as I open the
program. No error report appears, and I would like to know if
Microsoft and Apple is aware of this problem, without such reports.
This problem started after the Tiger install. I did the same tasks on
Word with Panther, without ever having a problem with Word.

Work through the standard troubleshooting tips listed here:

http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm
(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

Work through them one by one until something helps. If nothing does, post
back.

Alternatively, test it in a new user account. If the new account works, you
can switch over if you prefer that to testing.

I have repaired disk permissions, i have created new "normal" template
by changing name and allowing Word to generate a new one. I have
tested other user. I have searched font caches and erased those if i
find them (but i usually can't find the ones indicated in some other
post here). Nothing seems to be working

Have you checked for duplicate or corrupt fonts? You can use the system
application Font Book to check for duplicates and disable any you find. As
for corrupt fonts, this article may help:
<http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313535>

Or you can use a third-party font utility to check for corrupt fonts.

Though I appriciate your time, effort, and suggestion, this article is
for people having problem when they open a file at the start. The
problem that we are talking about can happen after an hour of work or 3
hours of work. Of course, I have a good habit of saving the documents
which I learned during my days with XP. However, since I do know when
the crash will occur, I still stand to loose at least a page because I
like to finish my line of reasoning and not save after every sentence.
Whether it is a paragraph or two, that is alot in my line of work. Not
to mention it is nerve-wrenching because you always unsure of the last
time saved.

I have tried suggestions from here and Apple, and though I have not
suffered a freeze, unfornuately that is not a reliable inference to say
it won't occur again.

thank you gbapplejam! well said. I downloaded cocktail last night,
ran it, and restarted the computer. i only worked for about an hour
after that so haven't run into the problem again but i have also been
saving incessantly. I appreciate all the suggestions people have
offered. i just think microsoft needs to figure out what the problem
is.
i only recently switched to apple and purchased my G5 a short time ago.
But since i bought it i was having about two crashes a day, mostly
with microsoft programs. I would make sure to send all crash reports
immediatly. The apple programs (ilife) never had a problem. i
repaired disk permissions and the rest but have since stopped using
Entourage. i now use Mail and Address Book and Firefox (most recent
update).
anyway. Word has got problems w/ Tiger. I hope i can provide any more
information as tech people need to troubleshoot to glitch and provide
an update/patch to cure the crash problem noted in this thread.
Thanks for the attention and time.
