Word keeps freezing up!!!

I have Windows XP Home and am running Word 97. I keep
working on this document that is only 500k in size. and
Word keeps freezing up, no matter how long I wait, nothing
happens and I have to Ctrl-Alt-Dlt out of it. In my event
viewer I get the following message

Event ID: 1002
"Hanging application WINWORD.EXE, version 8.0.0.3514, hang
module WINWORD.EXE, version 8.0.0.3514, hang address
0x000e813d."

Any suggestions? Thank you so much for your help!
