Word keeps reformatting my numbered lists

I am creating a style for a numbered list, using Roman Numerals with a .25
indent and a .5 hanging indent.

I also have a style for a sublevel list, using A, B, C, etc. (indent of 1
and hanging .25)

If I create a list using the Roman Numerals and A style, when I try to start
a new list, beginning with I or A, as necessary, Word automatically assigns
it the next number in sequential order, even if the previous list is several
pages above.

I select Format/Bullets and Number and specify Restart Numbering and the
following happens (or other weird stuff, but it will take too long to
explain).

* It renumbers the list starting with I/A but then changes my tab
settings.
*Or, it renumbers the list with weird numbers and if I press Ctrl Z, it
usually fixes them - but it changes my tab settings.

If I set it back to the original tab settings using the ruler OR reassign
the Style, then it forces the numbering back to sequential order. Sometimes
if I immediately press Ctrl Z, it fixes the numbering, but it still messes up
the formatting. I am EXTREMELY frustrated.

Also, I created a Style named "List I" in a document which has the above
numbering. When it wasn't working, I just closed the doc and decided to
start a new document. I started typing, clicked the Numbered List icon, and
then chose Format/Bullets and chose the Roman style. Word immediately
assigned it the "List I" style even though that style was NEVER created in
this document!

Note: They both used the same template BUT, the Template does NOT have the
"List A" style - never did.

I need an answer yesterday - I wasted a day trying to get help within the
company. PLEASE HELP!

Thanks, but using the Outlines doesn't help (I should have mentioned I tried
that).

And even if it did work, the whole point of Styles is so you can create and
format your own AS YOU LIKE IT. Why don't they fix Word so it doesn't
override your Style settings?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Deanna

You can use outline numbering with any style. You can format the paragraph
style and the numbering any way you like. But if you want the numbering to
work, it should be set up the way Shauna describes.
