Word killed by Acrobat Pro 6 ?

After upgrading to Acrobat Pro6 I can no longer open Word
(Win XP, Office XP)without it immediately crashing. There
is a problem with PDFMaker.dot since changing the name of
that file eliminates the problem. But then I cannot make a
PDF from Word.
When I try to upgrade Office XP with Service Pack 1 (the
instructions I get from the Office Help page)I get another
error message as follows: "Error 1328. Error applying patch
to file C:\config.msi\PT28.tmp. It has probably been
updated by other means and can no longer be modified by
this patch. For more information contact your patch vendor."
The choices are RETRY and CANCEL.
I have reinstalled both Office XP and Acrobat Pro 6.0
numerous times in various order with the same result.

Hi Brian,
I had the exact same problem but I didn't realise it was Acrobat 6 that was
causing it until I did some experimenting.
See my reply to my own question in a post called Error 1605 just before your
post.
