Word kills computer when using bullets and borders

Hi

I installed Office 2003 and started just started using Word today and have
had a dozen crashes that have totally shut down my computer (a new HP Laptop)
every time. What the hell is going on? I've never seen such unstable
software...

I think I may have isolated the problem to Bullets. Is there any advice on
how I might fix this problem? I have done detect and repair and installed all
updates and service packs what else is there for me to do?

Will Microsoft give me a refund if their software doesn't work?... I doubt
it...

Any thoughts on how I can improve the situation?

Cheers, Sean

Don't use the bullets button if you are going to be editing.

See: How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Word
document
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html. (For
bullets see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/bullets/controlbullets.html, the
subject is related.)

As Word 2003 is very stable in use if you are having persistent problems you
need to look for an external source. My suggestion would be to update and/or
reinstall the printer driver. Word uses the printer driver to format the
document and minor corruption that will not affect most applications can be
devastating with Word.

Thanks Charles

Implemented the remedial action for Bullets buts still get crashes (2 in
five minutes). I have reverted from my own template to the 'normal' template
coupled with using the styles method suggested and, so far, so good.
Wow, imagine the outcry if I bought a car and had to modify the dash myself
just so the thing would keep running... case for Lemon laws for Software??

Does anyone know if I can return my Word2003 software to get a refund
because it doesn't work as advertised nor is it reliable?

If this problem continues I will be forced to re-install WordXP, or install
OpenOffice, or is there another remedy?

Cheers, Sean

When you do you encounter the error? Applying Bullets? Going to
Tools/Bullets and Numbering? If either then you could be expatriating
some corruption in the Registry. Even though your computer is new
since most use an image for new computers it's entirely possible the
corruption is part of the image.

Exit Word and in the Registry drill down to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\List Gallery
Presets

And delete the List Gallery Presets key. This key will be recreated
using the defaults upon restarting Word.

In this situation you may also want to use the Registry/Export
Registry file command and export your selected branch. That way if you
find the change wasn't necessary or incorrect you can merge the
deleted branch back to the Registry by double-clicking the resulting
file.

assistance by email can not be acknowledged.
