Word lets me open files that are already open by someone else

The Word 2004 has a quirk that's causing me a lot of grief. With the
old version, if I tried to open a file on a server that someone else
had open I'd get a message asking if I wanted to open a copy. With the
new version I get no notice that I'm opening a copy. So, I open a copy
without knowing it, spend a lot of time editing it and then find out
someone else has the main version open. Is there a preference setting
involved in this or is it just something I'm going to have to find a
way around.

I'm not certain, Timm, but I think that may be a function of the server's
OS. Hopefully someone will chime in and offer a more definitive answer.

The server's OS hasn't changed (OSX Server 10.2.8) and we didn't have
any trouble with older versions of Word.

Actually, mmmmark's on the right track. The problem is that Apple changed
API behavior from OS 9 to OS X and that broke a number of current
applications. See the article below and note the workaround of using
lockfiles.

Sorry not to be of more help.
