Word Links do not Update

Links in Word file to Excel file do not automatically update when running on
network. Previously worked with another PC and same user. Running Win XP
SP2 Office SP 3 on both old and new PCs.

Links are present and can be updated manually but don't update on opening
Word or dynamically when changes made to Excel file. Tried lowering macro
security settings and increasing network rights; didn't help. May be Windows
issue but doesn't appear to be network (Novell) problem.

Others on network have same problem. Works for some users on different PCs
but not for users with new PCs even if same software versions as previously
worked.

Please advise. Office or Windows problem?

On PCs where the links don't update, look in Word at Tools > Options > General
and check "Update automatic links at open" if it's turned off (which I think is
the default setting).

All links are set to automatically update. This is a case where the links
worked fine until something in the new PC setups disables automatic updates
over the network.

You didn't note the version of Word you are using. This could be due to a
security patch that prevents some fields from automatically updating. See if

Word version is 2003 SP3. May be related to security patch but no luck
applying anything from cited article. I installed the Word field security
addin. Also tried adding FieldCalcSecurityLevel and setting to 0 in Registry
(although didn't find Policies folders in Word 11 as described for Word 10 so
didn't add key there). No luck with either.

Must be a security setting somewhere. Any suggestions appreciated.
