Word Links to Excel -- Update Issues

I have a word template that has several chart objects pasted "as link--

Bitmap" from a large Excel spreadsheet. The links are all defined as

"Automatic", but do not automatically refresh. Also, when I navigate
to "Edit-->Links....", Highlight a link and press the "Update Now"
button, it will NOT update. Paradoxically, I must change the radio
button how how it should update and then press update now to actually
see the chart update. It doesn't matter if I change from automatic to
manual or from manual to automatic, it just needs to be different that
it was previously.

Any thoughts on why they don't update automatically when the
underlying chart is modified? Also, why does the "Update now" option
in "Edit-->Links" not work without the quirky switching from auto to
manual or vice versa?

Application builds are: Excel 2003 (11.6560.6568) SP2, Word 2003
(11.6568.6568) SP2, Win XP Pro 2002 SP2 (5.1 Build 2600).

Excel application is open, and was opened before Word template is
opened (as I've found posts saying if you open in the other order it
might not work).
