word locks my document

Hi! I'm a system administrator at a school and we've got this big stupid
problem.
Today there were three full computer rooms with thin clients and the keep
getting their documents locked. Without them locking it at all. It just locks
and all buttons get grey and they can't write anything on it.

It's not even possible to save the document. And they keep ketting the "do
you want to save changes to NORMAL.DOT"

Somehow I believe these two are connected somehow. The normal.dot and the
lockup.

And yes, I have activated Office and all the software that comes along with
it.
Why has Microsoft programmed this? Why would somebody want to program Word
so that it locks the documents of people?

And I would understand why this is an issue if they have shared the same
user. But they dont'! They only have one user and are not connected on
another station or anything.
