Word locks up. Sometimes after typing nearly a page, sometimes a few words.
Must restart computer and then lock ups are more frequent/faster. Have tried
numerous fixes, nothing works. (This is Word from MS WorksSuite2001, using
XP) I did try the "winword.exe /a" , thinking a template corruption was
cause. That did not fix the problem. Does that mean my Normal.template &/or
Word's startup path are definitely NOT corrupt? I'm looking at the
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWordContent.htm page and am
not sure if "ii" under a) means to then try messing w/ the startup path, or
that it does not apply to my problem. The only thing other than that that I
haven't tried is the network printer driver. (The info is very confusing to
me. This is just ONE computer, hooked up to ONE printer...)and...Word does
not crash immediately upon startup. AUGGHH Someone help me!!!! I've got
deadlines to meet.

This may be a printer driver corruption. Try deleting and reinstalling the
printer. Test again.

Another possibility is a problem with the proofing tools. Open Word and go
to Tools, Options and under the Spelling and Grammar tab, clear the Check
spelling and grammar while you type options. Then go to Tools, Languages,
set languages and check the Do not check spelling or grammar.

Close Word so that changes get saved to the normal.dot. Then reopen Word and
test again. Does that clear the problem? If so, the Proofing Tools need
removing and reinstalling. (Don't forget to re-enable those settings again
after testing!)

I will try both of your suggestions (could you give me a hint how to go about
removing & reinstalling proofing tools & as far as the printer driver
corruption, can I just uninstall & then go to hp website & have them install
latest version? Here is something I came across between my post & yours: 2
things really-- 1.) I went to do a disk cleanup & found that
{9F1C11AA-197B-4942-BA54-47A8489BB47F} is damaged (size 4KB)created
12/14/2003 last accessed 2/5/05 version 5,4,3790,14 Type ActiveXcontrol ;Code
Base http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/CAB/x89.....&on &on... Should I
delete this? & will it really screw things up if I do? Other thing..2.) I
have never purchased MS Office & have never installed it. I only have the MS
Works Suite 2001 which I have uninistalled & reinstalled, etc, etc. But...in
program files, there's a folder w/Microsoft Office w/ 2 folders--office
templates(size 2.56 MB has lots of Word templates)& folder 1033. Now, also in
Program files, is Microsoft Works (size 26.5MB) & folders 1033 also! &
artgallery. I believe the contents are different in the 1033 folders. & in
the Works 1033 is the task launcher & app. extensions etc. I do believe I
have deleted these Office files before, but maybe when I reinstalled Works
Suite, it reinstalled the Office files. (?) If you go to New Office Document,
it takes you to Word Wizard & to My documents & still locks up. Should I
delete anything "Office" related? Or is that part of the Works Suite? Someone
please address #1 and #2. I would rather have the #1's delete button ready to
push before I get back into Word & the whole thing locks on me again & I'll
never find my way back to the #1 problem's delete button. THANKS!

Okay, I tried both of your suggestions: 1.) Uninstalled printer/driver,
reinstalled (my version was the latest). Same problem in Word occurs. Also
tried 2.) Proofing tool tips you detailed for me. Same problem in Word
occurs. I am having to restart my computer so often trying to fix this thing,
I'm sure something in there is frying. Also, tried to do a scan disk....only
to find, Scan Disk no longer exists on my computer. I uninstalled everyting I
could re. Norton Internet Security in order to install Panda (thinking that
could solve my problem) and now Scan Disk is Nowhere to be found. I did
searches, etc. & nothing. Help Help Help!!!! From other posts on this & other
chats, a system restore is not going to fix the problem w/ Word. Help me
please!!!

I assume you have already uninstalled the Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for
Word and disabled the Office Plug-in in Norton AntiVirus?

U

Yes, I've uninstalled the Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word, but on the
Norton Antivirus, here's the deal: I had Norton Internet Security, and had
all these problems, so,....I bought Panda Platinum Internet Security. I
uninstalled everything about Norton that I could, and deleted manually other
Norton files that I could, (some remain,...but not many) and then installed
Panda. Now, I can't get into Norton to see if there is an Office Plug-in
hanging around. Don't think there is, but I'll do a search. Thanks for your
persistance in trying to help me.

Try the follow test from Office MVP Beth Melton's on that one:

Norton CE does not have the Office Plug-in option however if Norton AV was
installed on the computer and then later Norton CE was installed then the
Office Plug-in DLL could still be registered. I found this to be the case
when an OEM version of Norton was preinstalled.

First search your local drive for: officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. As on the
Symantec site, it does not include information on Norton CE but it will
contain additional details on the unregister command if you need them:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820

Also make sure that your temp directory is clean too:

See http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm

If it is still crashed, are you sure this is a Word problem and not your
computer? Try downloading the free version of SiSoft Sandra from
http://www.download.com/SANDRA-Lite/3000-2086_4-10359889.html?tag=lst-0-1
and let it run the graphics test or some other demanding test on loop to see
if your PC holds up.

Thank you Terry. I didn't realize until today that I had received another
post to this thread. (My email was supposed to inform me of that & didn't.) I
believe you are on the right track w/ this last one, & I will try all of your
fixes, however, I believe I have cut the problem off at the knees (not the
right fix, but worked in a pinch.) I think the problem was the programs that
were starting up were conflicting w/ each other (& I didn't/couldn't get rid
of some of them (including Norton's)) so, I went to <Start>, then <Run> & ran
"ms config", went to the startup tab, and disabled about 1/2 of the programs
that were starting up. I left the Panda's and Adobe readers, Internet server,
& Microsoft Office & Works one's. Had to restar, and viola, no more Word
locking up! Thought I'd post this before I did anything else in case someone
else had the same problem going on & needed a quick fix. Thank you very much
& I will get on your suggestion.
