Word locks up when I attempt to save or open or save a file.

Word (2002) appears to be working properly until trying to open or close a
file. The program then locks up indefinitely, displaying the working/waiting
symbol. The program has to be terminated via the task manager and the end
program dialog box as it is completely locked up. When running the program
again, it will autorecover the document that I was attempting to save, but
repeats the above problem again when attempting to save the file or open any
other file.

Have you downloaded Windows updates this week?

The quick but unsafe way is to uninstall the security patch that's
causing the problem. In Add/Remove Programs, check the box at the top
marked "Show updates". Select "Security Update for Windows XP
(KB908531)" and click the Remove button.

For a better workaround, until a new security patch is ready, read

Use the registry change in Method 1. Also read the replies that follow
that post, which give some useful advice.

Yes, I downloaded the updates and have gone in and deleted KB908531 as
suggested and the problem disappeared! Thank you.

A Microsoft employee posted this advice a few minutes ago:

"There is now a KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165)
addressing the issues that customers are reporting with MS06-015. It
provides information on the cause and what the customer can do to
eliminate the problems they're seeing without removing the security
update."
