Word Locks up

I have a user that uses Word and when she opens a file a certain way, MS Word
locks up. Here's how it happens: She first opens a document. She then uses
the open button or the drop-down menu from file to open another Word
document. Everything works fine. When she goes back to open another
document using the same method, the MS Word application stops responding. If
she opens documents individually through say My Documents each time,
everything works great. Only when she uses the open button or drop-down does
she have this problem. Is there a way to fix this problem "other than"
having her open the documents through My Documents.
Thanks
Mark

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.

The mapped drives she has on her laptop sometimes contain the files she is
opening. If I disconnect the mapped drives, she won't be able to access
files from other servers. Is there any other workaround for this error?

The user did not have any mapped drives on her laptop. She just informed me
that this occurs in Excel as well. A while back on her old laptop, the
problem was resolved by down grading to Office 97. So in conclusion, this
problem occurs in both Word and Excel. There are no mapped drives and this
doesn't occur in Office 97.

If there are no mapped drives, does this laptop user ever connect to a
network? How?

She rarely connects to the network but when she does. It depends what office
she is at but normally she connects via aircard when on the road or just
connects to the network through a nic when in the office. The problem she
has been seeing doesn't deal with the network at all. All the problems she
is having are local files on the hard drive.
We replaced her laptop because of this issue and she told me that everything
worked fine for about a month and then she started having the same problems
she had on the old laptop. Mind you the files from My Documents were copied
to the new laptop. What I'm thinking is, there is a corrupt file in the my
documents folder and when she opened that certain file, it corrupted the
entire My Documents folder. What do you think?

Doesn't anyone have an answer to my dilema? We are still experiencing the
same situation everytime the user opens multiple Office documents via the
open button.
Thanks
