Word locks up

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

When I go to file open word locks up for a minute or two then a blank screen appears. There is no connection to finder.

Before any suggestions can be made you need to specify your exact current
update levels of both Office & OS X.
