Menu customizations are stored in the Normal template, that's why trashing
the prefs did not help. Here are two ways to try and fix this issue:
1. Rest the Menu Bar. Go to Tools - Customize.Click on the Toolbars button.
Click once on Menu Bar. Click on the Reset button. It will ask if you are
sure. Click OK.
If the Normal template is not damaged then this should resolve the issue. If
not then try
2. Renaming the Normal template
The Normal template is in the Templates folder, which is in the Office
folder, which is in the Microsoft Office folder. Rename this to Normal Old,
for example, then restart Word. At that point a new Normal template will be
created.
If you have any Macros, Styles, AutoText entries, or Customized Toolbars
that you want to keep from the Normal Old template, you can use the
Organizer to import them.
