Word Mac '04 Spellchecker Proofing Tool

GHOpt

I upgraded to Office Mac 2008 and everything seemed to transfer over well except my Stedman's Plus Spellchecker. I noticed that in Office 2008 that the proofing tools are named with extension ".proofingtool." Where is the backwards compatibility with Office 2004? I tried adding the appropriate extension to my spellchecker file, but that didn't work. I also tried adding it as a custom dictionary. Is there anything else I can do? Can I convert the file somehow? There should be a way to make Office 2008 read this old file, unless it was based upon visual basic--I don't know whether or not that is the case. Any ideas?

Ask Stedmans, but I suspect the answer is "No, no way".

They have to link it in to Word somehow. They either did that with VBA or a
Library. Either way, it won't run on the Universal Binary on the Intel.

I have Word 2004 installed on my computer. The spell check and grammer check is disabled. They are both are greyed out and are4 not clickable.
I have taken my Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Students and Teachers CD into the Mac store twice and they agree that those programs are not working on their store computers. They want me to buy another copy. I do not want to buy another Microsoft Office CD. Why won't the techs in the store give me a copy that works? This is most frustrating.

Note: since you don't have *exactly* the same problem as the first
poster, it would be better to start a new thread than reply to an
existing one. You get better help if you don't mix 2 issues in the same
thread.

It's a little hard to tell from your description, but I think #4 on this
page applies to your problem:

OK, it is important that you mentioned that you are using Word 2004, thank
you. The answer is different in each version.

This problem CANNOT be anything to do with your Office CD. Before
installing, the installation program carries out a check to make sure that
it can read the whole of the CD. If it couldn't, it would alert you at that
stage and refuse to install.

Nor can this problem be cured by re-installing, because the file that is
having problems is not part of the installation. So even if they gave you a
new CD, it would have no effect.

Daiya has suggested the method that will lead to the answer.

I would ask you to go to Tools>Language in the bad document, and tell me
which Language is highlighted when you notice the condition.

I think you have part or all of your document set to a language that is not
available for Mac Word. If that is the case, the spelling and grammar
buttons are greyed out because the spelling and grammar programs for those
languages do not exist.

Change the language in the text and the tools should spring to life again.

Hope this helps

I'm in Word2004 and switch often between English and French as the default language, using the Tools dropdown menu. "Language" as an entry in that menu has vanished. How can I restore it?

Elementary: go to Tools, Customize Tools/Menus, highlight Tools, find Set Language and drag it to to the Tools menu in the Menubar.
