Word: mac 2001 shutting down

H

Hilary

Hi,

I'm a newbie; please bear with me! ;-)

I'm using word for mac 2001, on Mac OS 9.1. A few weeks ago, I
realized that I couldn't open one of the menus on Word. Then,
progressively, each window has been inoperable. I can access most of
the functions from the icons, but when I try to pull down any of the
menus now, nothing happens. It's as if the program were dying,
progressively.

I thought it might be a virus, and called my local Mac store, to ask
their advice. They said it sounded like a corrupted preferences file.
But I can't even find my Word preferences file in the system folder.

So, for all you experts: first, does it sound like virus or corrupt
files, and if it is a corrupt file, what *exactly* do I do?

Thank you so much!

Hilary

Fear not, Hilary! Many people have experienced this annoying little habit
of Word 2001.

I cannot thank you enough, Clive!!!! I was just about to take my Mac
to the local fix-it shop to have them look at it. You saved me so
much time and money. I have an online job, and can't afford to be
without my computer! The first fix on Beth R's site was all I needed.

Thank you *so* much!!!!

Hilary

Hilary,

I just went through a very similar problem - seems to
have been a corrupted preferences file.

Look in the Systems Folder > Preferences > Microsoft >
Word Settings (9). Drag that file to the Trash and start
Word. In my case, it worked normally then - the only
problem was that my custom settings for the program
tools, menus, etc. were lost.
