Word mac to pc compatibility

I have a new imac with office 2004 and have been told PC users should have no difficulty opening Word docs I send as attachements, but so far none have been successful. When the doc gets to the PC it appeears as a .dat file. I'm using the mac Mail email program.

Is this a settings issue? How can this be fixed?

The problem is most likely on the PC end because of how stuff is handled -
especially if the users are in an Exchange environment. Suggestions include:

1- In your Save As dialog check the option to "Append file extensions",
(*supposedly* unnecessary nowadays, but sure can't hurt:))

2- In your email software select the option for "Windows Friendly
Attachments" (or comparable) or use Apple Double or UTF-8 encoding,

3- Zip the files before sending as attachments to protect it from the email
system's hatchet men - don't just attach the naked file, and

4- Educate the PC recipients to *not* double-click attachments in the first
place - they need to be downloaded as files, then open those files.
