Word macro stops working

I have placed a global macro into word's startup directory. It runs perfectly
EXCEPT...

Some users report an error message which states basically: ["macroname"
caused error when it was last accessed]

Once a user gets this message, the macro will no longer load. Out of
hundreds of users, only a handful have experienced this problem but the
number seems to increase by 1 or two users a week..

As a workaround, I can put a shortcut to the macro on the user's desktop and
it will load - but it is baffling that it will no longer load from the
startup directory.

Any ideas on a solution would be appreciated.

The problem may be that the add-in (the .dot file with your macro) has been
"blacklisted" by Word and added to the list of disabled items.

If, for example, a user experience a Word crash, Word tries to find out what
caused the problem. If one or more add-ins (such as .dot files in the Startup
folder) were loaded when the crash occurred, Word may find one of these
add-ins to be the problem. The next time the user starts Word, a message like
the one you mentioned will appear and Word will disable the add-in. Macros in
disabled items are not available.

If you select Help > About Microsoft Office Word and click the "Disabled
Items" button, any currently disabled items will be listed. To enable an
item, click the item in the dialog box and click "Enable". As far as I know,
items cannot be enabled programmatically. Once you have enabled a disabled
item and restart word, the add-in will load again (unless Word encounters
problems again…).

Since a number of users have experienced problems with your macro, you
should check the macros in order to find out what may cause the problem.
