Word mail merge not working with Access query

Sometimes when I connect to an Access query from a Word form letter, I get no
error, but no results to merge into the letter. Opening Access and running
the query from there shows results, but the mail merge does not. I can't
detect a pattern of when this will work and when it won't. Anyone else
experiencing the issue and have a solution or at least explanation?
