Word makes computer shut down

I have a computer running Windows 98. It also has Office
97 Pro. Frequently, when you open a Word document and
type in any character, the computer shuts down and
restarts. Of course it then runs a scan disk because of
improper shut down. Any suggestions? This is not a new
load. The machine has been loaded with this OS and
application for quite some time and always ran with no
problems.

There might be something wrong with the normal.dot file. Rename the old one
& see if that fixes it.

Otherwise it might be a good idea to run a defrag if you haven't done one in
a while.
