Word master document and subdocuments problem

H

hks

I created a master document and subdocuments on one computer (with
Word 2003).
Then I copied it to another computer (with Word 2000) in order to be
able to print the document. But when I open the master document on the
second computer, it is unable to locate the subdocuments even though
they are all together with the master document in a folder. My guess
is the problem is due to the links on the subdocuments -- they all
give the path on the original computer. I have tried to alter/edit the
links but have not been able to.

For the future I would also like a recommendation on another program
for assembling a manuscript composed of several separate word
documents. I have wasted many hours removing blank pages, fixing page
numbers, etc.

Thanks very much for any help.

Regards,
Harvey

This is a FAQ.

But since I'm too lazy to find the FAQ I just googled.

How can I best use the Master Document feature?

General Answer: Don't use it. It has serious bugs and will corrupt your
entire document at the most inconvenient time possible. (This advice to not
use Master Documents reported as correct through Word 2000, SR-2.) John McGhie
puts it succinctly when he says that there are two kinds of Master Documents:
Those that are corrupt and those that will be corrupt soon.
Then I copied it to another computer (with Word 2000) in order to be
able to print the document. But when I open the master document on the

Could simply be absolute links as opposed to relative ones, or something
similarly moronic.

numbers, etc.

Sorry I don't know but I'm interested in good answers! :)
