Word/mathtype on intel

Hi,
I recently got a new Mac mini (intel). I put my office software and
Mathtype 5 on it, but there are some problems. These problems
manifest as follows:

1. when inserting numbered equation, the tabs are inserted as is the
equation number, mathtype starts in the background but nothing
happens. - I need to manually cut and paste the equation in.

2. When clicking on an existing equation (with mathtype not already
running) I get the message "word connote locate the server application
for Equation.DSMT4 objects". However, if Mathtype is already running
there is no problem.

I have tried throwing away OLE database files, but this has not cured
the problem. Any ideas anyone?

Many thanks,
Peter

You didn't mention what version of Office. It does sound like a problem
with Mathtype though. Is the application perfectly up to date (and
compatible with the version of Office you are using)?

Hi,
it's office 2004 and mathtype 5.1 They both worked together fine on
my old G5 running tiger - the new mac mini runs snow leopard.

Could be an install problem when you migrated to the new computer.
I don't use MathType myself so it's hard to troubleshoot. I just
remember all the postings when Office 2008 came out (and the kb on the
MathType website),

Hi,
well I have reinstalled mathtype several times now, and updated office
to the latest version of 2004.

Hi Peter,

Unfortunately, MathType 5.1 isn't supported on an Intel Mac platform; it's not a Universal Binary app. Try these things and see if they work; if not, you might want to consider upgrading to the latest version of MathType for Mac, version 6.0b.

1. Trashing the OLE database, as you've already done, was the first step. If you've installed more "stuff" since then, you may want to do it again.

2. Now you need to re-register MathType as the OLE handler for equation objects. To do that, hold down the Option key as you launch MathType from the Applications folder. That will open up a command line.

3. Type -regserver and hit Return.

Let us know if that works. (You can also contact MathType tech support at (e-mail address removed). They're very helpful.)

Hi,
Thanks, Bob, but that does not seem to have fixed it. If I install
version 6 how would I get that to work with the office 2004?

I've been using MathType 6 and Office 2004 for some time now. Works for
me.
