If you verified that Word was not running at all then out of curiosity, is your title bar visible? (the one with the document name) If you don't see the title bar then do you see the File menu appear if you press Alt+F? If the File menu appears then you might want to adjust the height of your screen or the position -- I'd say the top edge is being cut off. Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup.
