Word Merge not working with Excel database

I¹m trying to merge an excel database onto labels and other documents. When
I use the Data Merge Manager, I can create the labels, but when I try to
open the data source, the Word errors ³word was unable to open the data
source² and says to ³make sure the document is a valid Word document². If I
try to open it using [file-open], the same error appears. The excel sheet
opens fine in excel.

What gives??

In addition, excel is shades out the freeze and split buttons, so I cannot
view it as a single pane. All protection seems to be turned off.

Something funny going on with the Excel file by the look of it. Excel
is my favourite data source for address lists. Word happily eats the
raw excel. It does burp and mutter that it is converting it and stuff,
but works perfectly.

Try chopping the problem in half with a simpler Excel document with the
same matching column headings. I don't like the sound of that shaded
out split button. Copy the cells into a fresh Excel doc?

Indeed, you're right. When I copied my cells onto another workbook,
everything worked OK. I am a bit mystified still that occasionally, even
with the new spreadsheets, that I get a message about the doc being "read
only" It's not set as such, and the file folder has the permission right.
Strange.

Thanks, Alan
