Word Message re "changes to Normal Template" is incomprehensible.

I keep getting a series of messages when using Word re Normal Template saying
"changes have been made to Normal template, do you want to save them?" or
"do want to replace Normal template". Then it shows me the save dialogue box.

I have no idea what to do. Do I save changes? Why do changes occur in the
first place when I'm not doing them voluntarily?
