Word Misbehaving

I am trying to remove large gaps in in my text in a Word 2007 document.
Absolutely can't figure out how to do it. I've checked spacing before and
after and blank pictures.

Worse, when I delete the paragraph mark after a date heading to try to
eliminate the gap between the heading and the first sentence, Word shuts down.

Any ideas out there?

I last heard from MVP Jay Freedman on this and tried everything he
recommended.

Try this: On the Layout tab of the Page Setup dialog box, make sure that
"Vertical alignment" is set to "Top."

To display the dialog box, click the dialog launcher button (the arrow on
the bottom right) of the Page Setup group on the Page Layout tab.
