Word - modifications cannot be made, document locked. Help!

I recently created a document and have tried to go back to make revisions. I
keep getting an error message indicating that modifications cannot be made
and the document is locked. I have not changed any settings and to my
knowledge I am not working on a trial edition of the software. Help!

I believe I've seen this problem when I've had an instance of Word running
in the background (that I wasn't aware was running). Once that instance
was closed, the document was available again.
