WORD: modify selection button is grey

When trying to change buttons in a toolbar the MODIFY
SELECTION button remains grey after clicking (right and/or
left) the said icon.
What should I do to be able to change the button?

Right-click on any Toolbar and select Customise. When the Customise dialog
is open, you should be able to then select a toolbar button and choose
Modify. Is that what you are doing?
