Word normal.dot template

I cannot edit/save defaults for my normal.dot template, as in font,
margins, or add autotext. I have uninstalled the entire MS Office
Prof. 2003 (corporate licensed) and cleaned out all the temp files. I
use Windows XP platform. This issue became apparent on a start up
recently and had not occured before. Still happening upon
reinstallation. Also, I cannot view Word document content within
another program we use which is a collaborative tool for developing and
sharing information. It is a browser-based environment where users can
post documents, exchange ideas, and do other shared work. I can see all
other MS programs (Excel, Project, etc) within this application, but no
content in a Word document.

I am not quite sure about the Normal.dot problem but could it be that you are
trying to save it when it is open. If you open Normal dot, make your changes
then save it as say Normalx.dot and close Word. Then using Windows Explorer
you can delete Normal.dot and re-name Normalx.dot as Normal.dot. That way the
changes to your template will appear when you next start-up Word.
