Word not opening my file

I've created a document (officeXP/word 2002) bout last week but from
yesterday, it doesnt seem to open and get the following error:

The document name or path is not valid.
Try one or more of the following:
* Check the path to make sure t was typed correctly.
* On the File menu, click Open. Search for the file using this dialog box

I've had a look at the Support and there seemed to have been a hotfix for
this which was par t of Office SP3 and on installation, it said i already
had it installed.. i even did the registry thing it suggested bout creating a
new Dword value.

Strange thing is that when i copy it to another computer via the network, it
will open fine on the other PC. only reason i don't want to open it there is
cos its a v.slow computer and the file is already 10Mb. plus it would mean
transferring all the other files for the report.

Could someone please help as this file is v.v.v.v.important

If you have Norton Anti Virus, open NAV and disable the Office Plugin
option.

It sounds like the DLL for the Office Plug-in is still be registered.

Search for officeav.dll and if found go to Start/Run and run the
following command:

regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll"

In the above example the path for "Officeav.dll" would depend on the
location of the DLL.

i'm afraid there's no such dll.. did a full search of my computer with no
results. I don't think its this that is causing it tho cos other files open
fine and the Requesting virus scan at the bottom of the Word window only
lasts a few seconds. Its still a bit funny how it works on another computer
but not mine, where the file was originally created!

Is Win XP up to date? Are you using a Windows Server Network or are you
using a Windows 9x machine on a peer-to-peer network?

Yup, XP Pro is up to date with SP1.. have ordered a cd of SP2... but this
shouldn't make any difference should it? This has been the only time this has
ever happened and i still don't know why it would open on my other pc which
also is on XP Pro and with SP1 but not mine.

Try it again when you have ALL the updates installed not just SP2 but the
post SP2 Hotfixes too.

Terry

PS didn't answer question about network server, Win9x?

Well everything you have said points conclusively at the remnants of the NAV
install you had. Please go back to Beth's solution and make sure that you
are able to search for hidden and system files enabled. That is your
problem.

: yup

Hi!
Since a few days I got the same problem without knowing what causes it. In
my case I can't open any word document I got as attachment by email. The
error msg is something like "the document name or path is not valid. Try
these suggestions. Check the file permissions for the document or drive..."
I do not have any Norton software running, and it only happens to documents
that have a file name like "test document.doc". Any files like "test.doc" do
open fine, but as soon as there is a space in the file name, it won't open.
Why??? As I said, this just happened the first time only a few days ago.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help
Kalli

In your situation you need to recreate the file associations for Word
since it is breaking on each space in the file name. Go to Start/Run
and run:

winword /r

Note the space before the forward slash.
