Word not outlining like I tell it

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel can you please fix the outlining in Word? I frequently will have an outline as follows:
A. blah blah blah
        I. blah blah blah
        II. Blah blah

Followed by regular (un-outlined) text. Then, when I go to start a new outline and type. "A.", the autoformat will shoot my "A." out to "V." (roman numeral. or some other indentation) and throw in 5 tabs, even though there was never a "IV." before it. This even occurs when I push the "Outline" button in the toolbox. I can send you sample documents if you want. the result is below:

A. blah blah blah
        I. blah blah blah
        II. Blah blah

loris ipsum equitor. loris ipsum equitor. loris ipsum equitor. loris ipsum equitor.

v. blah blah blah (WHY IS MY OUTLINE NOW ALL THE WAY OUT HERE?! I TYPED "A."!!).

Control/Right-Click the newly added paragraph & select "Restart Numbering...
Or go into the Bullets & Numbering dialog & select the option.

BTW: Nobody here can "fix" anything even if it's broken. This is a
peer-to-peer newsgroup, not a direct line to Microsoft.

and when I do that it will change it to, lets say, "f." and still indent 4 times. And then when I hit "shift-tab" to move it back (hopefully) to the far left margin, the outlining will be at "I."(roman numeral) instead of "A."

I guess the point of my post was 1) to bring attention to this problem, and 2) see if anyone else experiences it.

When I type in "A." I mean "A." and not "VI."
