Word Not Responding--can't open or save files

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)

Just recently, I have been unable either to open any Word files or save any files. When I try to do so, I get the beach ball and find that Word is "not responding"
Does anyone know what causes this and, more importantly, how I can fix it?

Hi jth -

First steps: Make sure Word is updated to 10.1.9, Tiger is updated to
10.4.11, then run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions & restart your Mac.
