Word not responding.

Laura

I try to open a document that I use and add to (then
save, of course) quite frequently, it takes forever to
open, the screen stays gray for quite some time then the
title bar reads "Not Responding". The window never opens,
another little window opens with the option to send an
error report to Microsoft. What in the world is going on?
The document does this most of the time, and I only have
trouble with this one. It just so happens to be one I
really need to access.
Thanks for any assistance!!!

The document is corrupt (assuming it is just one document). Please let us
know what versions of Word and Windows you are using and what ServicePacks
are installed.

Terry, Thanks. I purchased my HP computer with Windows
XP and use the Word that came with that package. I also
have installed MS Office 2000 with Word on it. I'll need
some help with the ServicePacks; don't know what that is
or how to access that info. The document that I have
trouble with has just started giving me troubles. I've
been working with it for approximately three months. I am
experiencing other documents now that are "not
responding" also. Usually documents in excess of 6-8
pages. Thanks for any help!!! Laura

Hi Laura

In the version of Word that came with the computer (let's assume it was Word
XP), open it and go to Tools, Options and select the Save Tab. At the bottom
of the dialog box, check the option to Disable Features Introduced After...
and choose Word 2000 from the list. Click OK. Under the Help Menu, select
About Microsoft Word and check the Servicepack level.

Close that and open Word 2000 and under the Help menu check select About
Microsoft Word and check the servicepacks installed.

Please let us know the results. In addition, please confirm that you are on
a standalone computer (and not connecting to an Office Domain Server) and
what Anti Virus are you using please?

Hi Terry,
I did as you instructed. 1)Disable features after...I had
no drop down box, only "Disable features not supported by
Word 97" and I left it as it was, not checked. 2)
Servicepack level-MS Word 2000 is the closest thing I
could find to any kind of "servicepack". Checked system
info-nothing. Did a search-nothing. While there, I did
a "detect & repair". Began configuring "MS Office SR-1
Professional" and stopped, asking me to insert my disk.
Attempted that and my disk drive wouldn't open, so I
cancelled out of that.(Was not aware that I had a drive
problem until then. Haven't used any disks for a long
time.) Checked for "servicepacks installed" and found
nothing. I attempted to open the word file I'd had
problems with and it opened, but took a long time - 3 or
4 minutes (FYI-27,539 characters). I am on a standalone
computer. I have used Norton, but am considering another
so I haven't renewed it. I also use NoAdware v2.0. Any
further info you can provide will be helpful. I want to
try to avoid problems in the future. I really appreciate
your assistance!!
