Word not responding

A have a recurring but seemingly unpredictable problem with word (2003).
When I'm using word a lot, editing a number of files at once or editing a
large file a lot, I find that my computer slows down, the amount of memory my
computer is using goes up astronomically and finally word crashes to a halt
and stops responding. For ever more, when I open these files up on my
computer, these same files cause word to stop responding when they've been
opened for a few minutes, irrespective of how many documents i have open at
the time. Someone has suggested to me that my computer's RAM can't cope with
all that I'm asking of it, but when I open the same files on a computer with
significantly less RAM the problem isn't there. My computer has 196 MB of
RAM. Can anybody help?

Clean out your computer of abandoned temp files, run a full ScanDisk and
follow up with a Defrag.

Check that you have the latest graphics and printer drivers and then test
again. See this FAQ for some guidance with this:
