word not responding

Veronica

Please help! I get the message that "word is not repsonding" when I try to
open saved documents in word. Also, when I try to close word it will not
close. I have to go to task manager and close. I have all updates, have run
diagonostics that say everything is fine, but this has been going on for a
month now. I had no previous problems before and my excel is working fine.

Hi Veronica -

The symptoms you describe suggest that your Normal template is damaged or
corrupted. Try what's on this page for whatever version of Word/Office you
have - assuming you're using a Mac in the first place... Although it sounds
like you're using a PC version - you'll find the Windows Office groups here:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/FlyoutOverview.mspx

Always indicate what operating system & program version when posting - it
usually makes quite a difference - in addition to the issue itself.

I am with Bob:

Your Normal.dotm template is the most likely problem.

Search for it in Vista's search, quit Word, and drag it to the Desktop.

Word will build a new one when it restarts, and hat should cure the problem.

There are a lot of other things it could be, but that's the most likely.

Cheers

I was somewhat confused with the directions because I went to the following
website and it sent me back here.
http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/FlyoutOverview.mspx

I did notice there may be a conflict with my HP printer it is a HP deskjet
6500 and while I can print from my laptop, it seems there were some problems
with word working and not working when it was hooked up. I am a little
confused on this template issue and unsure how to remedy this. I tried my
search and that doesn't seem to work very well. I am going to try what you
suggest John.
Thanks for all the help.

Hi Veronica:

The "Web interface" of the Microsoft Communities will be the death of us
all! The incompetence of the design defies all rational belief, and the
fact that they have left it that way for several years is just.... Words
fail...

What is happening is that you go to the website, you choose a "Word"
newsgroup, then you type your question and click "Search".

Because the Search is designed by cocaine-crazed marketing types who have
never understood the problem, the search goes off and finds nothing.

At that stage, it fires your question into the group that is alphabetically
at the top of the list. The Microsoft Word Macintosh group.

Anyone looking at Vista would derive a sneaking suspicion that its designers
really wish they were a Macintosh, so perhaps it's understandable that they
can't tell the difference. But you and I know that there is a difference,
and it does matter.

Sorry: I am going to have to ask you to have another go, and this time,
make sure that the letters "MAC" do not appear anywhere in the name of the
group it takes you to :) I simply do not have the resources here to
resolve issues with printing from Vista.

Cheers

Buy-um a real Web Design program, DreamWeaver comes to Mind.

They need to round up every copy of FrontPage and even its code base at
MS and Burn it so one will never figure out how to foist it on anyone. :)
