Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

When I open a Word document, either saved or new, I am unable to work with the document. The spinning wheel turns and turns, and I have to Force Quit the program. Any help will be appreciated.

I need to know your update version of Word and OS X and the amount of memory
in your system to answer that question.

Look in Word>About Word and give me the version number...

Thanks, John.
Word is Version 12.1.5 (08119). OS X is 10.5.6, and I have not downloaded security update 2009-0001. I have 2 gig of memory.

OK: I suspect you have an incomplete Update.

Please re-apply the most recent Apple Combo Update, then the most recent
Microsoft update.

Then use Disk Utility to repair permissions, then re-start the computer.

That may fix it, and it's quicker than the next suggestion.

Cheers

Thanks, John. I re-applied Apple Combo Update. After I got the MS update and started the installation process, I got the following message at the Select a Destination point: "You cannot install Office 2008 12.1.5 update on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume." I then went ahead and repaired permissions using Disk Utility.

FYI, this MacBook Pro has two users. User One has no trouble opening Word. Only my side is unable to open the program.

Thanks again, Liz

Hi Liz:

OK, that's a pain. It's a "Folder Permissions" issue. It may be that
Spotlight, running from your User ID, cannot "see" the application
directory. The installer uses Spotlight to find the bits it needs.

However, tracking this down could take forever...

The quickest way out of this mess is to create a new User ID. Test it: if
it works, move your documents into it and delete the old one.

It sounds absurd (and it is...) but you can do that in about five minutes.
You could be there all day fixing the real problem :)

Cheers

Hello John.

Sorry for the delay in replying and thanks for your help. I created another user ID and Word opened perfectly. My problem with moving files from my current ID to a new one is that I'm running a virtual machine on my current Mac, and I don't think I can reinstall the program (Fusion) and Windows on a "new" computer.

Any other ideas will be greatly appreciated. Liz

Hi Liz:

Fusion will not see itself as running on a new computer. Windows will think
it is running in "Fusion" so it will think it's running in the "same"
computer. :)

Don't tell Microsoft, but *I* copied my virtual machines from my PC to my
Mac, and they ran just fine... (Yes, they did have to re-activate, but
that's just a sniff of the Internet...)

You should not even need to move Fusion or its virtual machines, because
they would have been installed in the Application directory, which you are
not going to move. You need only move your Documents folder across.

Cheers

Good morning, John. I fixed it by re-installing Office. I didn't think I had the CD, but found it and gave it a try. Word now opens. I apologize for taking your time and appreciate your help. Best regards, Liz

Hi Liz:

That's weird!! That's the one thing that SHOULD NOT have worked on a Mac
:)

However, it would have re-created the preferences, which must have been the
issue.

Cheers
