Word not saving existing document

M

Mike T

I have updated the registry hoping that my problem would be fixed by
the update for the windows update already discussed on the board, no
good, did not fix my problem.

What is happening is this; when I open an existing word document, edit
it, and try to save it under another file name Word freezes up and
stops responding. I have a several documents that I update on a weekly
basis and simply just change the file name, I am unable to do this with
any of them. I can however create a new document with no problems.
Just seems that when I use the "save as" feature it freezes up the
program.

Thanks in advance for your help.

If the Registry edit doesn't help, then you have little recourse but to
uninstall the update that's causing the problem.

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.

I uninstalled a windows update that was causing the problem. Found the
fix on another website. Uninstalled the update and everything is
working fine.

Mike T - Can you post where exactly you found the fix? I'm having the same
issue and it's really frustrating me! Thanks!

You need to go into "Add and Remove Programs" under the control panel,
click on the "Show Updates" box; scroll down until you see "Security
Update for Windows XP (KB908531). When you find this update uninstall
it, should correct the problem, worked for me!

While this is may be necessary, it shouldn't be the first step. It reopens
the security hole that the update was designed to fix. Try the other
solutions first.

Microsoft said I had to go to the manufacturer for help with my Office
problem (the same problem mentioned here). Dell tried to sell me a year's
support for $239 or a one time support for $99. I decided to search through
Microsoft support and found thisdiscussion group. I did as Mike T suggested
(uninstalling KB908531) and rebooted. Works fine now. Thanks, Mike!

As I reread my earlier "thank you", I believe I thanked the wrong person - or
at least failed to thank you, Suzanne, for directing us to the article you
mentioned. In any case, I'm very pleased that the problem is corrected
without paying Dell for their support.

While uninstalling may be necessary, it shouldn't be the first step. Try the
other recommendations first because what you are uninstalling is a fix for a
very real security hole in Windows. By other recommendations, I don't mean
shelling out for additional support; I mean those recommended in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165.

Mike,
Thanks. I did that last night and then woke up this morning to the same
problem. The automatic update feature reinstalled the Security Update. I
deleted it again and this time turned off the automatic update feature. I
don't want to keep it off indefinitely and am hoping MS might decide to send
out an Update that will correct the problem. Others have said that it's not
wise to delete the entire Update because a portion may be useful/necessary.
I feel sorry for those who are even more inept at fixing computer problems
than I am!

Don't turn Automatic Updates off entirely; just make it ask permission
before downloading or installing. When you are offered this particular
update, you can keep refusing it, or there is a box to check saying (in
effect), "No, and don't ask me again."
