Word-Not shutting down completely

I have a brand new install of Microsoft Office 2002 on a brand new computer.
All of the programs work except for Word. During the course of my day, I
open numerous documents in Word and close after makeing changes. I don't get
error messages or anything like that. What happens is that my computer will
start to run 'jerky' or very slow. I then have to do a 'control/alt/delete'
function to bring up the Task Manager. When I click on the Processes tab, I
will find 5, 6, or as many as 9 one day, instances of WINWORD.EXE running in
there. The only way to get my computer back is to end all the processes.

I have done a re-install, a uninstall, re-install, Detect and Repair. Have
even tried a fix showing that maybe my user profile was corrupt. I have done
all the updates available for my version and I just can't seem to get
anywhere.

Someone in another forum suggest 2 things....1 was to download a 'fix' that
was direct at Word 2003, not 2002 and the other was to just leave Word
running all day. Not an option for me.

Does anyone have ANY idea where to begin with this?

I'm a newbie and others here know much more about Word, but I must say this
sounds suspiciously like a virus...

A virus that ONLY attacks word? This is a work computer that is part of a
HUGE network.......like some 1500 computers...we are part of a university.
As I said, this is a brand new computer....Not even a month old. Also when
the computer was first set up the first thing that goes on it is Symantec
Anti-virus that is the current engine and up-to-date definitions (updated
nightly).

I guess I am finding a virus to be pretty far-fetched, but then again....who
knows.

Test to see if this is consistent. Open Word and then close Word. Check in
the Task Manager to see if it closed correctly. (Note that Outlook must be
closed to do this test.) If Word is still running, kill it in TM.

Then open Word in Safe Mode: from Start, Run type in

winword /a

and press enter. Now close Word and check in TM again. If Word is closed
now, it means that you have some nasty incompatible add-in or macro that is
stopping Word closing. Check for something like an AutoClose macro or an
add-in in Word Start-up.

I had quite the same problem with Word xp (2002) in Windows 2k. Also all the
newest updates for Windows and Office installed. I followed instructions
given by TF and, really, Word did close correctly in safe mode. I have
installed Acrobat macros and MathType macros, both very unlikely to cause
problems. I looked in Word at Tools->Macros->Security and set the security
level first to medium (did not hep) and then to low, which did help. I use
AVAST as an AntiVirus program so that I am not afraid about the virus content
of macros since AVAST does check this.
I have another computer with Windows xp installed and there this problem did
not appear (with above security level set as high).
