Word -numbering side bar is greyed out

Hello: I want to number the pages in Word- insert -- numbering it will add
the last few lines in the footer instead and the numbers are greyed out I
have never had a problem with numbering the pages before how to I fix this?

Then you should probably post in a newsgroup other than one dedicated to
Word for Macintosh. Perhaps:

microsoft.public.word.application.errors

Or alternatively you can try to trick Word with fields. Display
Heathers/Footers and type there {PAGE}. The {} are not common
brackets, you will instert them by CTRL+F9 and then type page. Then
select what you type, right mouse click and say toogle fields codes.
