Word oddity-lists

Hi,

Has anyone else seen this oddity in Word? I am creating a list, of
items (similar to an outline, but in the page view), with headings,
numbered 1,2,3..., and subheadings, labeled a,b,c... Everything seems
to be working fine. Now, in one of my top headings, I put something in
parentheses, followed by a subheading. The subheading automatically
gets indented to the beginning of the item that was in parentheses,
with a label appropriate to that level of indenting. I can't seem to
find anyway to get Word to continue the indentations at the levels I
saw above. If I manually change the indent level (by using tabs, etc),
Word keeps the same label. If I try to change it to the type of label I
want, it changes labels for the whole document. Very frustrating...

Any ideas as to how to get around this bit of Word telling me what I
want to do, without asking me?

Thanks in advance,

C

Hello -

You might take a look at Tools>AutoCorrect & explore a variety of 'helpful'
features that many users are better off without. Your specific concern is on
the AutoFormat As You Type page - remove the checks for Automatic Bulleted
Lists & Automatic Numbered Lists. Also, on the AutoFormat page remove the
Lists checks as well. While there, take a look around at the other features
controlled from there to determine if they are of use to you. If not, turn
them off too. Any you are unsure about can be looked up in Word Help.

Along the same lines, if you aren't already familiar with it, it's worth
your while to take an in-depth tour of WordMenu>Preferences, where you'll
find even more settings that can be adjusted to your liking (more 0r less).

Thanks for the reply and help. I got around that little bit of
strangeness by removing the parantheses. That solved it.
