Word (Office 10.1.5) Won't Save docs as Word Docs, Only allows for "iTunes Document"!?

When I try to save files in Word, I'm given a pull down menu of file
types; strangely, none of the options say "Word Document," except a
few at the bottom that are really old versions of Word. I have
instead, as a first option "iTunes Document," which seems really odd.
I can save files in rtf format, but I lose my footnote formatting that
way, and something similar happens if I try to save as an older Word
doc, like Word 5.1.

If I have worked on a document for a while, I start getting messages
that there are too many documents (even though I have no others open);
then, when I try to save, I get either a permissions error message, or
the too many documents message. If I try to save through the save as
menu, I get the "iTunes Document" problem, and then my document won't
save at all. Quitting and restarting have been to no avail.

I can't help but feel like there are ghosts in my machine...has anyone
else ever heard of such a thing??

Why would my Word think I wanted to save a text document as an iTunes
file??? And what can I do to solve this problem?!

Thanks!!

I'll say that sounds realy odd. I don't think I have a solution, but
for others I would like to clarify a few things...

When you say that you "save files in Word," are you saying that you are
selecting "save" from the "File" menu, or hitting the save button on
the tool bar (which does the same thing as hitting "Save" from the
"File" menu.

When I do that, a sheet comes down from the document with my Finder
view, and under the Finder view is the Format field, which by default
says "Microsoft Word document." If I click on that, then I get a pull
down menu with all my format options which include:

Document template
Text only
Test only with line breaks
MS-DOS text
MS-DOS text with line breaks
Rich Text Format
Unicode text
Stationary
Speller custom dictionary
Speller exclude dictionary
Word 4.0 for the Macintosh
Word 5.0 for the Macintosh
Word 5.1 for the Macintosh

iTunes never even comes up as any option.

When I select "Save as" from the "File" menu, I get the same options as "Save."

I am using Office v.X 10.1.5 on OS X 10.3.3.

Very strange! Try repairing disk permissions and post back if that doesn't
work:

For OS 10.2.x or 10.3:
Go to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities. Open up Disk Utility. Select
your hard disk, then click the First Aid tab. Click the button to "Repair
Disk Permissions".

For OS 10.1.5:
Download the Repair Privileges utility, free from Apple, and run it:

Sounds like munged Finder preferences to me (the window you see when you
save a file from Word is part of the Apple Finder, not part of Word). But I
have no idea how to fix it.

Cheers
