Word on my iMac balks at saving files

Version: 2004 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Power PC Trying to save a gaggle of maybe ten Word files as my current G5 is going to Apple store tomorrow where all my files will be migrated to new i5 iMac.
   But when I try to Save, getting the spinning beach ball.
   I'm using Office Mac Pro 04 at present, will be buying the suite with my Mac to get Word 2008. (Is this upgrade advisable, by the way?)

How can I rescue/save these files? (Want to save to both Docs and 4GB jump drive.)
