word open menu drop down does not work

I am the having same problem as someone else, but the fix suggested by
"garfield-n-odie" has not changed the problem. When I want to open a file in
WORD® and use the drop down menu the program just stop working. It then after
a few minutes says “not responding†and I have to close the program and
restart. Please help!
I am using MS windows XP Professional Version 2002 service pack 2. Any new
thoughts apart from disconnect unused networks???
