Word opens and then program closes when I try to open a document

I am using Word2000 9.0 and have never had an issue before. Now, when the
program opens, all seems fine; but when I go to open a document from the drop
down lists, the whole program closes. I notice down in the left hand corner
that is is saying "requesting a virus scan" and then the program closes, if
that means anything. I have installed ACT database and it does use Word after
it generates a Sales Quote, and it has been after this that I have been
having the problem. I have looked endlessly for online assistance to no
avail. Help please?

Likely the problem is not ACT, but your virus scanner or Word itself. Try
