Word opens slowly and will not close

Recent problem with Word 2002 (after downloading XP2). It opens slowly (15 to
20 seconds) and closes either slowly £0 seconds) or not at all (I get a Prog
not resp in Task Manager and have to End the program). I tried renaming
Normal.dot. Didn't fix it. Any ideas?

Thanks. had tried this one but didn't work. Also tried deleting the data key
but no joy. Must be a corrupt template. (Using winword.exe /a opens Word
immediately). Trouble is I have about 70 of them - mostly MS Works. Will be a
long job. Cannot find any way in Explorer of changing all .dot to .old in one
go. Anyway I would have to change them back one at a time. Looks like a long
job. Thanks anyway for your suggestion. This seems tyo happen so often - I
have had it twice before, lickily with normal.dot - that a utility to verify
template files would be useful, if such a thing is possible.

I think this is the right track. using winword /a opens word immediately so
looks like a template corruption. But XP seems to be putting up hurdles. I
have searched for all the dot files and find I have about 100 of them -
mostly from MS works I think. There does not seem to be a global edit in
Explorer which can change all the .dot to .old and anyway I would have to
change them back one at a time to find out which one is the problem. I tried
your suggestion of looking in the StartUp files. Found these but can't see
anything in them. I have made sure hidden files are displayed (set the option
via control panel/files options/view/show hidden files and folders). Nothing.
Any ideas? If all else fails I can plough through them in search. This seems
to happen so often - I have had it twice before with normal.dot that a
utility from MS to check corrupt files would be useful.

Thanks for your reply. Incidentally I tried delting the Data registry key
and have disabled the Norton plug-in.

70 what? Only normal.dot and add-in templates are at issue here. Works has
nothing to do with it, unless you have the appalling Works add-in installed
:( See http://www.gmayor.com/multiple_mail_merge_entries.htm for removal
instructions)

Incidentally there are lots of utilities around that will allow you to
batch rename files - howver this will not be required here.

To clarify, you do not need to remove document templates, only global
templates and add-ins (those that you find in Word's Startup folder or the
Office Startup folder).
