Word opens very slowly

We just upgraded our 2003 server. We had a 2003 server on old hardware that
was setup as a domain controller. We purchased new hardware and installed
2003 server. We ran DCpromo on the new server and made it an additional
domain controller. We moved all data to the new server and stoped all shares
for files and printers. We setup all the printers and shares on the new
server. Then we ran DCpromo on the old server to remove it from the domain.

The problem is when we turn off the old server some word files can take 3-4
minutes to open(using word 2000)(while this is happening the task manager
show word as not responding). If we wait long enough the files will open.
The same files open no problem in word 2003. If we turn the old server back
on everything opens correctly(normal speed). We have no printers installed
on the old server and all shares have been stopped. Any ideas on what word
needs on the old server to operate correctly?

I have heard of a problem similar to this before, and believe it may be
Document Templates to which documents are linked.
