Word opens with faded out Iphoto links

Version: 2004 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel I see a large white screen with faded out Iphoto squares. The white screen stretches to infinity on either side. I can't get Word to open to the documents list. It's as if a link is broken or it's stuck trying to connect to inserting a photo.
How can I fix this?
btw, if I go thru Finder to a specific document, Word opens properly.

Before anything else, make sure Office & OS X are fully updated ‹ 11.5.6 for
Office 2004, 10.5.8 for Leopard. Restart your Mac & see if the problem
continues. If you're using Spaces, does the same issue occur if you turn
Spaces off?

Both Mac and Office are at current levels of updates. This problem has persisted for several days now. I have shut down and restarted several times. I don't use Spaces... don't know what it is.

Then try these 3 separate troubleshooting techniques & reply with the
results of each:

Launch Word while holding the Shift key,

Log in while holding the Shift key,

Launch Word in a different User Account.

Also, please clarify exactly what you're referring to ‹ I'm assuming you
mean that if you go to Insert> Picture> From File. Does the same aberration
occur in the File> Open dialog? Or File> Save As?
