I must have done something stupid because when I open a new Word document it
opens with the full page of graph squares.
How do I get it to open as a plain blank sheet?

Display the Drawing toolbar and choose Grid on the Draw menu. Clear the
checkbox for "Display gridlines on screen."

In Word 2003 or earlier, View > Toolbars > Drawing. On that toolbar,
click Draw > Grid and uncheck the option "Display gridlines on
screen".

In Word 2007, click the View ribbon, and in the Show/Hide group,
uncheck the Gridlines box.
